Abstract

Indian agriculture sector contributes about 20 per cent of GDP and provides livelihood for more than 50 per cent of the total population of the country. The history of developed countries and emerging markets indicates that as an economy develops and grows, agricultural exports as a percentage of overall merchandise exports decrease. India also has recorded a consistent drop in agricultural exports over the years. The expansion of the export market of developed and emerging economies has been significantly aided by the WTO. With the goal of fostering more equitable competition and less distorted industries, the WTO Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) offers a framework for the long term reform of agricultural trade and domestic policies. The present paper attempts to study the export potential of Indian agriculture products in the era of WTO. The study is based on secondary data. Two digit HS code products ranging from 01 to 24 were taken for the study and for studying the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), two and four digit HS code products also are taken. The export potential of India in the global market is analysed by using Balassa’s Index of RCA. The study reveals that some agricultural commodities like meat and edible offal, coffee, sugar and cereal have a comparative advantage in export.
